About Birds Birding Trips Blogging Conservation Destinations Inspiration Reviews Contact Birding How many can YOU see in a day March 31, 2023 by Paul Lewis No Comments EBird really knows how to push my buttons . I mean that in a good way : By automatically showing one’s new year list each January 1st , and comparing it to one’s last several year lists , they always make me want to hit the ground running with as many species in my first week as I can manage . And in my case , that means heading up to Lake Cuitzeo . Except in the sad year of 2020, when Lake Cuitzeo had almost entirely dried up by January 1st . Most years , a day in January of serious birding around Lake Cuitzeo can give me around 85 species . Only one other of my favorite sites can come close . So up north I go , always

About Birds Birding Trips Blogging Conservation Destinations Inspiration Reviews Contact Birding Breeding Crested Pigeons in Broome March 26, 2023 by Clare M No Comments Crested Pigeons Ocyphaps lophotes are very widespread throughout Australia and can easily be observed in Broome on the streetlights on a wintery morning The Crested Pigeons enjoy cooling off under the sprinklers in the parks and gardens on hot days too . Despite this article saying that they build a delicate nest we have observed much more substantial nests here in Broome . Considering Broome often experiences cyclones and strong winds it does make sense for the birds to build a more substantial nest to survive the extreme . weather Crested Pigeons only lay two eggs and the nest we observed in our local park successfully

Eurasian Black Vulture with a satellite transmitter spent the night in the arable fields near Belgrade” . Superficially similar but unrelated to New World condors , it is huge , more pterodactyl-like than bird-like . I dipped it some years back — I am not aware of any local sightings since , and to this day have never seen it . Before I was born , it used to be a rare breeding species in mountainous areas south of Belgrade , but became extinct after the 1960s due to intensive

About Birds Birding Trips Blogging Conservation Destinations Inspiration Reviews Contact Birding Birds Frustratingly Common March 22, 2023 by Faraaz Abdool No Comments Something that’s irked me more often than I’d like to admit is the inclusion of the word common” in the name of a bird . It seems almost insulting , sure it allows some insight into the abundance of the particular species in a particular area at a point in time , but all birds are rare and exotic somewhere . The irony is most apparent when a bird so named is a legitimate rarity I get excited whenever I see a Common Ground Dove for example . They are decidedly uncommon in T T but surely ubiquitous somewhere else . This type of common bird is not what spawned this post , however . Bearing the same designation but actually

On the one hand , it obviously is a splendidly dressed bird in a multitude of expressive colors . On the other hand , if somebody told me it had been designed by a straight male fashion designer with a strong desire to appear gay , I would also easily believe . it Or to put it differently : if an imaginary child of mine ever drew up a male Mandarin Duck out of his or her imagination , I would immediately take away most of the crayons and maybe only leave those necessary to draw the female . bird While this may sound like a serious criticism of the male
